About

The Affirming Churches Network is a network of South Australian LGBTQIA+ affirming churches united in our commitment to fostering safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals. We provide a directory of affirming churches across the state, making it easier for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies to find a supportive faith community. Our network strives to support, advocate for, and celebrate LGBTQIA+ individuals and their rights within and beyond the church community.

What is an LGBTQIA+ affirming church?

An affirming church fully embraces and supports LGBTQIA+ individuals, allowing them to participate and lead at all levels of church life without restrictions or judgment. It recognises and celebrates the inherent worth and spiritual journey of LGBTQIA+ individuals, affirming them as valued members of the faith community.

Key characteristics of an affirming church include:

  • No Restrictions in Church Leadership or Liturgy: An affirming church places no limitations on LGBTQIA+ individuals’ participation in church leadership and liturgical practices, to the extent allowed allowed by denominational polity. This includes marriage and ordination.
  • Views Being LGBTQIA+ as Consistent with Christian Teachings: It recognises that someone can be both a faithful Christian and openly LGBTQIA+. Affirming churches do not view being LGBTQIA+ in and of itself as sinful or unbiblical, and they do not require LGBTQIA+ individuals to be celibate or suppress who they are.
  • Celebrating and Including LGBTQIA+ People: Affirming churches strive to create safe and supportive spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals. This includes, where possible, providing support and pastoral care specifically tailored to their needs and advocating for their rights and dignity both within and beyond the church community. They may also use gender-neutral terms for God and modify hymn lyrics or liturgical texts to be more inclusive and affirming of LGBTQIA+ individuals and relationships.

It’s important to distinguish between an affirming church and a “welcoming” church. While a “welcoming” church may allow LGBTQIA+ individuals to attend services and be part of the community, it may not fully affirm them. Welcoming churches typically restrict LGBTQIA+ individuals from holding leadership positions and/or require them to be celibate.

While we have made efforts to verify that the churches listed on this website are affirming, church positions and practices can vary. We cannot guarantee the current status of each church’s affirming stance. We encourage you to directly contact the churches you are interested in to confirm their LGBTQIA+ affirming commitment and ensure their values align with your own.

How are churches added to the directory?

When the website was launched, churches were identified and added to the directory through research and efforts to find affirming churches in South Australia. Churches can now add themselves to the directory or update their details by signing in or creating an account, or by sending an email to contact@affirmingchurchesnetwork.com.au pos
